ILENE'S LIST OF PEOPLE WHO NEED TO GO FAR FAR AWAY
#22 BARBARA WALTER
Once upon a time, Barbara Walters was a female pioneer in the misogynistic landscape of broadcast television. Every bit of respect she earned. That was decades ago. She is no longer on the forefront of journalism; she is a pandering, starstruck celebrity profiler. Also, she is unforgiven for unleashing the twit that is Hasselback upon the nation.
#23 DIANE SAWYER
Again, beautiful, smart woman works her way through the boys' clubs that were politics (she was Nixon administration, people) and TV journalism. But the dumbed down blonde schtick is old and weathered (and the Cybill Shepherd vaseline-on-the-lens lighting doesn't help.) Maybe leaving GMA to replace Charlie Gibson on ABC World News Tonight will restore her credibility but I doubt it: taking a huge paycheck for reading a teleprompter with feigned gravitas is such a misjustice given all the serious female journalists doing real work out in the field. (I adore her hubby Mike though.)
If Jessica Savitch had lived (and she'd survived her personal demons) she'd be kicking your asses all over the place and taking your prime tables at Michael's. So ladies, you've earned your place in history through determination, grit and class. Now it's time to step aside gracefully and stop tarnishing your legacies.
